Quality, safety and environment

How we work

ISO 9001:2015 certified since 2011 and Cyber Essentials certified. Quality, safety, environmental care and the people who do the work are part of everyday operations at Millbrook, not paperwork kept for audits.

Quality

ISO 9001:2015, certified by BSI

Millbrook has held BSI certification since 2011 and operates a quality management system to ISO 9001:2015, certificate FS 569306, for machining medium to large castings, fabrications, components and assemblies up to 10 tonnes and 3 metres diameter or cubed to customer specifications.

In practice that means contract review before we quote, controlled drawings and revisions, set-ups checked against datums before the first cut, inspection during machining, and final inspection against the drawing before release. Large features are checked with a Faro Prime 2.4 m six-axis portable arm. Records go with the job when your purchase order asks for them.

The system is reviewed internally every month and audited externally by BSI, and reviewed by management alongside our production system so problems are found and fixed at the root.

Health and safety

Heavy work, done safely

Lifting and machining parts up to 10 tonnes carries real risk, and we manage it as part of every job rather than as a separate exercise. Each job is risk assessed, heavy lifts are planned, and our overhead cranes and lifting equipment are inspected and maintained to the legal schedule.

Machines are guarded and maintained, PPE is provided free to every employee, and the shop floor is kept clean and orderly as part of our ISO 9001 standards. Near misses are reported and acted on, and every new starter is inducted before they work on the shop floor.

Our approach follows the principles of ISO 45001, the international standard for occupational health and safety management, which replaced OHSAS 18001.

Environment

Environmental management in everyday operations

Environmental management is part of how the shop runs each day. Steel, iron and non-ferrous swarf is segregated and recycled; coolants and oils are maintained to extend their life and disposed of through licensed waste contractors; and machines are run and maintained to use energy efficiently.

We machine to finish in as few settings as the part allows, which saves energy and avoids scrap, and repairing worn parts rather than replacing them keeps metal in use for longer. Our approach follows the principles of ISO 14001, the international standard for environmental management systems.

ESG and our people

A responsible local employer

Our policy is simple: look after our people, our neighbours and the environment, and deal honestly with customers and suppliers. These are the commitments behind it.

Apprentices

We run an apprenticeship programme, training young machinists on the shop floor alongside experienced engineers, so skills that go back generations are passed on.

Local employment

We recruit from Clay Cross, Chesterfield and North East Derbyshire, and invest in training the people we employ.

Environment

Recycling of swarf and metal, careful management of fluids, and repair over replacement wherever a part can be saved.

Governance

An audited quality system, clear responsibilities, protected data, and fair, honest dealing with customers, suppliers and staff.
