Large CNC horizontal boring
Boring, milling, drilling, tapping and facing on large castings and fabrications up to 10 tonnes, with travels to X 3,000 mm on a full 5-axis machine. Several faces machined in one setting, so bores and faces stay true to one another.

Why horizontal boring
Several faces in one setting
On a horizontal boring machine the part sits on the table and the spindle comes to it from the side. Turning the table brings each face of a housing or frame to the spindle without lifting the part again, which is how bores on opposite faces stay in line and how faces stay square to each other.
Our largest CNC horizontal borer is a full 5-axis Doosan DB-130CX with X 3,000, Y 2,000 and Z 1,600 mm travels and a 40-station tool changer. A Cogsdill facing head lets it face, groove and bore large diameters on parts that cannot be turned. The Union BFT130/7 adds X 2,785, Y 2,400 and Z 2,345 mm, the deeper reach suiting tall fabrications. A WMW 105 CNC horizontal borer and two smaller CNC horizontal borers take medium components so the large machines stay free for large work.
Parts up to 10 tonnes are lifted by our 10 t and 5 t overhead cranes. Large or awkward fabrications are set up, checked against the drawing datums, and machined complete wherever the travels allow.

How a job runs
From drawing to dispatch
- DrawingSend the drawing, material, quantity and date. PDF, DXF, DWG, STEP or IGES.
- Review and quoteWe check size, weight and features against our machines and reply with a price and lead time.
- Set-upHeavy parts are craned in, set and checked against datums before the first cut.
- MachiningMachined to the drawing, in as few settings as the part allows.
- InspectionChecked against the drawing with manual gauges and the Faro arm, then released for dispatch.

What is the largest part you can horizontally bore?
Parts up to 10 tonnes. The Doosan DB-130CX travels X 3,000, Y 2,000 and Z 1,600 mm; the Union BFT130/7 reaches Z 2,345 mm; the manual Sacem 130 MST reaches Z 3,000 mm. If a part is close to a limit, send the drawing and we will check it.
Can you machine all faces of a housing in one setting?
Usually, yes. The 5-axis Doosan turns the part on its table so each face comes to the spindle without re-setting, which keeps bores in line and faces square.
Do you take one-off horizontal boring jobs?
Yes. We machine prototypes, one-offs and batches to customer drawings.
