Manual machining

Conventional horizontal boring on a Sacem 130 MST with X 3,000, Y 2,000 and Z 3,000 mm travels, for one-offs and awkward work that suit a skilled manual set-up. Checked with a Faro portable arm on parts too large to move.

When manual makes sense

Skilled set-ups for one-off and awkward work

Not every job needs a program. For a single large part with a few critical features, a skilled machinist on a manual borer can often set up and finish it faster than it can be programmed. Our Sacem 130 MST has the longest Z travel in the shop, 3,000 mm, which suits deep bores and tall parts.

Millbrook began as the machine shop of Bryan Donkin Co. Limited, and that heavy-engineering experience carries on in the people who set and run our manual machines.

Finished work is checked with our FARO portable arm on or off the machine, with full dimensional reports available; see Inspection.

Questions

Manual machining questions

More answers on the questions page.

Do you still do manual machining?

Yes. Our Sacem 130 MST manual horizontal borer has X 3,000, Y 2,000 and Z 3,000 mm travels, and suits one-offs and awkward set-ups.

How do you inspect parts too large for a measuring machine?

With a Faro Prime 2.4 m six-axis portable arm that mounts magnetically on the part or on a tripod.

Can you modify a part we supply?

Yes. Send the drawing and details of the part, and we will confirm how it would be set up and machined.
