CNC vertical boring and vertical turning

Large diameter rings, flanges, discs and housings turned and bored on four CNC vertical lathes, up to Ø2,134 mm and up to 1,650 mm high. Heavy parts sit flat on the table, which keeps them stable under the cut.

Why vertical turning

Heavy diameters, turned flat on the table

A vertical borer, or vertical turning lathe, holds the part on a horizontal rotating table with the tool coming down from above. The weight of the part sits on the table instead of hanging from a chuck, so large, heavy or out-of-balance parts can be turned accurately and safely.

Our 6 ft CNC vertical borer turns up to Ø2,134 mm by 1,120 mm high. Three 4 ft CNC vertical lathes take Ø1,829 mm: two identical standard machines, and an S type with extra height for parts up to 1,650 mm high, so taller parts and batch work can run in parallel.

Where a turned part also needs drilled patterns, keyways or faces off the centreline, it moves to a horizontal borer or machining centre here, without leaving the shop.

How a job runs

From drawing to dispatch

  1. DrawingSend the drawing, material, quantity and date. PDF, DXF, DWG, STEP or IGES.
  2. Review and quoteWe check size, weight and features against our machines and reply with a price and lead time.
  3. Set-upHeavy parts are craned in, set and checked against datums before the first cut.
  4. MachiningMachined to the drawing, in as few settings as the part allows.
  5. InspectionChecked against the drawing with manual gauges and the Faro arm, then released for dispatch.

Questions

Vertical turning questions

More answers on the questions page.

What is the largest diameter you can turn?

Up to Ø2,134 mm by 1,120 mm high on our 6 ft CNC vertical borer. Our three 4 ft CNC vertical lathes take Ø1,829 mm by up to 1,650 mm high.

What is the difference between vertical boring and vertical turning?

They are the same family of machine. A vertical borer or vertical turning lathe spins the part on a horizontal table and both turns outside diameters and bores inside diameters.

Can you also drill and mill a turned part?

Yes. Drilled patterns, keyways and off-centre features are machined on our horizontal borers or machining centres in the same shop.
